Beginner's Sailing Courses
We run courses for both adults and juniors at all levels of experience.

Taste Of Sailing
A short introduction to the thrills & spills of sailing.
Duration: 3 hours.

Start Sailing [Level 1]
Assumed Knowledge: none
Description: Introducing elements of all the skills you will need to become a competent sailor.
Content: How to sail in all directions, including an awareness of launching and recovering
Ability After Course: You will be sailing in light winds with assistance from your instructor
Duration: 2-10 days

Basic Skills [Level 2]
Assumed Knowledge: Sailing skills & knowledge to the level of Start Sailing
Description: Setting you up as an independent sailor.
Content: Rigging, launching, sailing in all directions. Capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge
Ability After Course: You will be sailing on your own in light wind conditions
Duration: 4-10 days

Improving Skills [Level 3]
Assumed Knowledge: Sailing skills & knowledge to the level of Basic Skills
Description: Consolidating and practicing your sailing skills
Content: Developing the skills and knowledge required to sail in most conditions and preparation for the specialist courses ahead.
Ability After Course: You will be able to set up and sail the boat in moderate conditions.
Duration: 5-10 days







Advanced Sailing Courses
We run courses for both adults and juniors at all levels of experience.

Advanced Boat Handling
Aim To develop advanced boat handling and tuning skills and prepare you to sail flat out in strong winds.
Previous Knowledge You must have completed the Improving Skills course and been sailing regularly. If you have not been regularly practising these skills you will need to do so prior to the course or extend the length of this course in order to allow time to do so.
Duration: 4 - 10 days.

Kites & Wires 1
Aim To introduce you to the thrills and spills of sailing with spinnakers and trapezes.
Previous Knowledge You will be expected to have completed or have experience equivalent to the Improving Skills course.
Duration: 4 - 10 days.

Kites & Wires 2
Aim To introduce you to the thrills and spills of sailing with spinnakers and trapezes.
Previous Knowledge You will be expected to have completed or have experience equivalent to the Kites & Wires 1 course and one other course at that level
Duration: 4 - 10 days.

Go Racing 1
Aim To introduce you to sail boat racing and develop your skills and knowledge to a level where you can comfortably race at club and inter club level in Ireland.
Previous Knowledge You will be expected to have completed, or have experience equivalent to Improving Skills.
Duration: 4-10 days

Go Racing 2
Aim To introduce you to regional & national competition in Ireland and develop the skills and knowledge required to campaign at this level.
Previous Knowledge You will be expected to have completed, or have experience equivalent to Racing 1 and at least one other course at that level and have been sailing and racing regularly.
Duration: 4-10 days

Adventure 1
Aim To introduce you to the skills and knowledge you will need in order to undertake longer trips and to sail in stronger winds.
Previous Knowledge You will be expected to have completed, or have experience equivalent to the Improving Skills Course and have been sailing regularly.
Duration: 4-10 days

Adventure 2
Aim To develop the skills and knowledge you will need to become an independent sailor capable of undertaking extended trips and of making correct and appropriate decisions in adverse circumstances.
Previous Knowledge You will be expected to have completed or have experience equivalent to those covered in Adventure 1 and one other course at that level.
Duration: 4-10 days

Come Sail with us on our Hobie Cats in Your Leisure Time.

Hobiecat Centre Sailing Academy is now open for enrolments for the 2014 sailing season.You can enjoy the thrills of cat sailing as you learn with us at the Avon-Ri Resort on the beautiful Blessington Lakes. Once enrolled, for a small fee, you can sail from May to September and all without owning a boat !

Our Sailing centre offers sailing lessons with certified instructors with plenty of opportunity for leisure sailing or racing - you decide.

Join now for a small enrolment fee and sail our extensive fleet of Hobie-Cats throughout the season. Our Hobie Cats range from the 12 foot Bravos, Hobie Dragoon, Hobie 15 & 16s, to the 18 foot Hobie Tiger and F18. Free assessment sail on enrolment and all gear supplied.

There will be supervised sailing sessions every Fri evening 18.00- 21.00 Sat and Sunday 10.00 - 13.00 and another session 14.00-17.00 exclusively for Academy.

This offer is limited to the first 20 applicants with an agreed program to ensure quality sailing time.

Youth Squad

It started with our Hobie youth squad in 2008 and we are now trying to capture the natural growth into a senior squad(over 19s)as well. We have taken the squad to the South of France 3 times during the Feb/March Mid Term to train with French youths in Provence.

Within the academy we train up to racing levels and enter them in the IMA National events calander & The Travellers trophy. North, South, East, West, Inlands and culminating with The IMA National Championships.

The Youth Academy Catamaran Coaching costs €50 per day and is generally run over weekends.

Powerboat Courses
We run courses for both adults and juniors at all levels of experience.

Introduction to Powerboating
Assumed Knowledge: Beginner
Description: This course provides a practical introduction to powerboats and is ideal for anyone who is new to powerboating or who will be crewing a powerboat.
Content: You will be practicing all of skills you need to become a useful and safe crew including helming, high speed manoeuvring, ropework.
Ability After Course: You will be able to safely and effectively crew a powerboat and take the helm while under supervision.
Duration: 1 day

National Powerboat Certificate
Assumed Knowledge: Skills & knowledge included in "An Introduction to Powerboating". However this course may be extended in duration to include these where participants have no previous experience.
Description: The "driving licence" of powerboating. This course provides all of the skills and knowledge required by anyone taking charge of a powerboat.
Content: Boat preparation, launch & recovery, low & high speed manoeuvres, anchoring & docking, basic navigation, weather & coastal knowledge, safety.
Ability After Course: You will be competent to take charge of an open powerboat by day on inland and coastal waters with which you are familiar.
Duration: 2 days

Safety Boat Course
Assumed Knowledge: ISA National Powerboat Certificate or an equivalent. It is strongly recommended that participants hold a first aid certificate and the Short Range (SRC) VHF radio operator’s certificate.
Description: Primarily aimed at instructors and racing clubs this course prepares you to escort and provide safety / rescue cover for fleets of dinghies, windsurfers and canoes taking part in training or racing activities and to assist in race management duties.
Content: Boat preparation, boat handling, race Management, rescue of siling dinghies, Windsurfers, canoes, kayaks and Kitesurfers, towing, incident management & medical emergencies.
Ability After Course: You will be able to escort and provide safety / rescue cover for a range of water sports activities including training and racing. You will be able to assist in race management duties.
Minimum Age: 16
Duration: 2 days



Blessington Sailing School was set up in 1999 to offer a professional and friendly sail and powerboat training service at Blessington Sailing Club to the Blessington area and surrounding counties.

Our choice of sailing craft was easy as no manufacturer can offer the same extensive range and quality as Hobie- Cat!
We moved to the new and friendly facilities of Avon-Rí Hotel with beach and deep water marina at Burgage, Blessington in 2006. The extensive and professional facilities of The Hotel are available to all our visitors with great coffee, superb food and spacious accommodation at reasonable rates.

Blessington Sailing School hold weekly Summer camps starting the 17th June up to the end of August.

These cater for all ages from 7-8 years upwards. Adults are also welcome to join.

During the summer months is you wish to simply go out for a sail you can borrow one of our boats in a scheme we call Pay & Play available to all with Level 2 in catamarans or conversion. For more information on Pay & Play or to book a slot please contact us by email or phone
